Why does a Ketogenic Diet & Hyperbaric Oxygen Therapy (HbOT)Inhibit Tumor Growth?
Notably, ketone body metabolism protects healthy cells from oxidative damage by decreasing Reactive Oxygen Species production and by enhancing endogenous antioxidant capabilities. Crucially, cancer cells are unable to effectively metabolize ketone bodies; therefore, ketones do not confer the same protective effects to a cancer cell, as they do to a healthy cell. Additioinally, Hyperbaric Oxygen Therapy increases Reactive Oxygen Species production within a metabolically stressed (glucose restricted) tumor cell, which leads to membrane lipid peroxidation and cell death.
Hence, the Ketogenic Diet weakens cancer cells by glucose restriction, while simultaneously conferring a protective advantage to healthy tissue capable of ketone metabolism. This metabolic targeting sensitizes cancer cells to HbOT-induced ROS production and oxidative damage, contributing to the efficacy of combining a Ketogenic Diet with HbOT.
